I just recently revisited a work originally written for piano solo in 2007, Inner Self. In this keyboard miniature, now scored for for pipe organ solo, I explored the idea of a self-enduced and closed transformational process. While it might texturally resemble a Baroque trio sonata, its contrapuntal design is largely based on the principle of spiral canon.
Another aspect of Inner Self is my profound interest in exploring the notion of and sense of the self, both in musical structure and experience. My desire was to create a musical fabric that would reflect some recent philosophical, scientific, and theological concepts that characterize the sense of our very self. In this regard, I hope that while this organ miniature mirrors some of those structural or passive ideas, the listening experience resonates the active or inner manifestations of the self.
