Pharos

Large Orchestra, Choir and Computerized Sound (2005)

pharosPharos evolved from the sound analysis of an excerpt of glagolitic chant recorded on
an island Hvar (Pharos) in Croatia. This chant has been analysed and reconstructed in the score using the model of additive instrumental synthesis. The orchestral textures in this piece attempt to reveal the inner world of the chant and its organic unity. The rather complex structure of the chant has been magnified and transcribed in the score as clauses. Two periods that open and close the work are representations of the originally analyzed and compressed chants respectively.

Although a large orchestra is employed, the intention was to render a rather intimate and transparent impression akin to chamber music. Intrigued by its inner world, the piece comes closer to the sound’s fluidity and its intrinsic structure.
